Yankees Bat Day the First 11 Years 1965-1975 |
FIRST YANKEE STADIUM BAT DAY |
This is a clipping from the 1965 New York Yankees scorecard advertising the first ever Yankees Stadium Bat Day giveaway. This promotion for Bat Day was held on Father's day June 20th 1965. 71,245 Fans were in attendance. |
As Recorded in the 1966 Yankees Program "A record high major league Attendance mark for 1965 was set at Yankee Stadium on Bat Day. Appropriately held on Fathers Day.....Because a big turnout is expected, based on similar experiences by other American league clubs, Dads are urged to buy or order their tickets now, and assure their youngsters of Yankee Bats." The following year an article appearing in the 1966 Yankees Scorecard noted that "A record high major league Attendance mark for 1965 was set at Yankee Stadium on Bat Day"
The paid attendance for Bat Day June 20, 1965 was 71,245. Yankee Stadium capacity was 67,000. Grandstand tickets with a Letter as the Game No. would have been used for the overflow of fans. The Yankees decided to have a second bat day promotion on August 14, 1965 after many young fans were turned away on June 20th. The Yankees continued to hold a second unscheduled bat Day until 1973.
The first "Bat Day" baseball bats were made by Hillerich & Bradsby Co. of Louisville KY, and they would exclusively produce the bats for the Yankees until 1975. The following year in 1976 the bats were made by Adirondack. The center brand used on the bats in 1965 featured the Hillerich & Bradsby's "H&B" logo, typically used for inexpensive store model bats. The letters "PRO" is featured at the top of the label, and PRO designation would be used for all Hillerich & Bradsby bat day bats made in the following years.
In 1966 the center brand is changed to the full spelling "Hillerich & Bradsby Co." Made in U.S.A. label, that would be used on all bats made by Hillerich & Bradsby until 1979. The only variation is in 1969 & 1970 when the bats were "MADE IN CANADA" In 1980 Hillerich & Bradsby changes to the "Louisville Slugger" Logo center brand, still using the "Pro" designation.
Yankee Stadium Bat Day scheduled for June 18 1972 was rained out. After a long rain delay the game was called off, but the bats were handed out to the crowd that showed up.
Response to popular demand by many fans unable to come to the first rained out Bat Day, the Yankees schedule a second Bat Day on August 13, 1972. During the renovation of Yankee Stadium after the 1973 season the Yankees moved into Shea Stadium for two years, 1974 & 1975, but the Yankees kept the Bat Day tradition going.
