Dr. Sidney Stephen Gaynor, was
my wife’s uncle. He was an
orthopedic surgeon and the Yankee
team doctor for about 29 years
starting around 1948. Pictured
above examining Mickey Mantle's
knee after Mickey, tripped on the
sprinkler in game 2 of the 1952
World Series. He had the original
painting done by Stevan Dohanos,
who did many Saturday Evening Post
covers. It originally appeared on
the March 1959, Medical Times cover
with Yogi Berra sitting on the end
of the exam table. In October 1961,
with the home run race going on,
they had Dohanos replace Berra with
Roger Maris, and republished it on
the cover. Kelly R. Eisenhauer
wrote an article about it which
appeared in the SCD and on the
cover as well.
