Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees
became the first athlete ever to appear on a
box of Wheaties cereal in 1934, when
General Mills issued 12 hand cut cards
on the back of the Wheaties cereal box.
As advertised "12 FREE - Pictures of
Famous Champions," one on each box,
were sold in 1934, and an additional 15
athletes were made available in 1935.
The oversized cards measure 6" x 6-1/4"
with the frame, and 5" x 5-1/2 without
the frame. The blue-tone player photo,
has a blue and Wheaties-orange
background, with a white facsimle
autograph at the bottom
The first two cards on the checklist, Jack Armstrong, was the "All-American Boy" a fictional
character, part of an advertising
campaign created by General Mills.
Illinois high school track star Herman
"Jack" Waddington posed for the
photo
used for the cards. The unnumbered
cards are listed in alphabetical order.
