In 1959, the Rathkamp Matchcover
Society (RMS) issued a series of
convention matchbooks featuring pinup
girl art on the back panel. The
colorful pinup girl illustrations
included; "See Seņor," "What's
Cooking," Hula-Lulu," and this baseball
theme "Play Ball" pinup with a catchers
mitt. The Yellow back panel reads; "19
ANNUAL CONVENTION RATHKAMP MATCHCOVER
SOCIETY, Sun City Motel, Miami Beach,
FLA. Aug. 24-30, 1959. The inside cover
reads; We Collect Book Match Covers,
Send A Trade Or Write First _._ Dr.
M.B. Bender, Moll RD. #2, Rhinebeck,
N.Y. _._ Frank L Tripodi, 93 Victory
Crescent, Milford, Comm.
The Rathkamp Matchcover Society traces
its roots back to 1939, when a group of
enthusiasts visited the Brooklyn Navy
Yard to pick up service and ship
matchbooks on their way to visit the
New York Worlds Fair. An informal
meeting was held that year at the home
of Henry Rathkamp of Newport, RI, who
died in 1940. The Group had such a good
time, they decided to make it an annual
thing. Known as RMS, the Rathkamp
Matchcover Society was founded in 1941
with a membership of 45 collectors. The
name was selected in honor and memory
of Henry Rathkamp who had sparked the
convention idea.
