From about 1937-1940 the New York
Port authority issued a series of "4
Minute Crossing" advertising matchbooks
to promote their bridges and tunnels.
The NY-NJ transportation facilities
that were promoted included; The
Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, Geo.
Washington Bridge, Goethals Bridge,
Bayonne Bridge, and the Outerbridge
Crossing. The full length matchbook
cover artwork in this series featured
deco-art style cartoons such as; Santa
Clause, WOR radio announcer, Family
driving in car, man driving in car,
woman in sun hat at the beach, and two
baseball themed covers.
One "4 Minute Crossing" advertising matchbook outside cover, "These Save
Time.. I'm Telling you" depicting a
baseball player yelling at an umpire.
The other "4 Minute Crossing"
advertising matchbook, "Line Drive By
Bridge or Tunnel NY~NJ" depicting a
baseball player reaching out with his
glove catching a line drive. The
manufacture of these "Full Length"
matchbooks is the Lion Match Inc. of
NY. A "Full-Length" cover has the
design/text running the full length of
the cover; there are two types: 1)
horizontal Full-length; 2) vertical
Full-length.
The inside cover reads: "Free Travel
Aids and Sports Schedules (in season)
N.Y. - N.J. Road Map Golf & Swim
Baseball Schedule Football Schedule
Hockey Schedule Published by the Port
Authority 111 - 8th Ave., New York,
N.Y. Ask for free copies at P.A. bridge
and tunnel toll booths, Macy's Sporting
Goods, Alex Taylor & Company, or any
United Cigar, Whelan Drug, or Davega
Sports and Radio Store; also at hotels,
tourist bureaus, and the larger gas
stations in Metropolitan New York.
